Friends of the Earth ve Heinrich Böll Stiftung tarafından yapılan bir analiz sonucu Meat Atlas tarafından 20 et ve süt şirketinin bir araya geldiğinde Almanya, Fransa veya İngiltere’den daha fazla sera gazı emisyonu ürettiği açıklandı. En büyük 5 şirket (JBS, Tyson, Cargill, Dairy Farmers of America ve Fonterra) birlikte ExxonMobil, Shell ve BP gibi petrol şirketlerinden daha fazla emisyon üretiyor. 2016 yılında, bu ilk 5 şirketin ExxonMobil’in 577 megatonluk emisyonuna kıyasla 578 megaton emisyon ürettiği bildirildi. İlk 20 süt ve et şirketi toplamda 932 megaton üretti.


Hükümetlerarası İklim Değişikliği Paneli, gıda sektörünün tüm sera gazı emisyonlarının %21-37’sinden sorumlu olduğunu bildiriyor. Dünya’nın sadece %18’ini sağlamasına rağmen hayvancılık bunun %56-58’ini oluşturuyor. Şirketlerin ayrıca büyük finansal desteği var: 2015’ten 2020’ye kadar 2.500 banka ve fon, sektöre 478 milyar dolar yatırım yaptı ve şirketler hem doğrudan hem de dolaylı devlet sübvansiyonlarıyla desteklendi.
