European Institure for Technology Food, Afrika’daki açlık problemine çözüm olarak Afrika yam sebzesini sundu. Araştırmalara göre, Afrika kıtasına uygun olmayan batılaştırılmış yeme düzeni açık problemini artırıyor. Dolayısıyla daha protein ağırlıklı alternatifler bulunması kıtadaki açlık problem için çok önemli. Bu alternatiflerden biri de yam sebzesi.

Afrikalıların şu anki ana protein kaynakları manyok ve mısırdan oluşuyor. Bu ürünler protein ihtiyacını karşılamasına rağmen karbonhidrat ağırlıklı besinler. Beslenme düzenlerindeki bu dengesizlik ise 5 yaşın altındaki çocukların %32’sinde malnütrisyon ve gelişim bozukluklarına sebep olabiliyor.
