Amerika’da bulunan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) genetiği değiştirilmiş domuzların alerjiye sebep olabilecek yemekler ve ilaçlarda kullanımını onayladı.

Yapılan çalışmalar, domuzların genetiği ile oynanarak bazı insan gruplarında alerjiye yol açabilecek şeker üretimini engellemeyi amaçlıyor. Kırmızı etin içerisindeki şeker Alpha-gal sendromuna sahip olan insanlarda ölümcül alerjik reaksiyonlara sebep oluyor. Domuzlar üzerinde geliştirilen bu çalışma ile genetiği değiştirilen hayvanların şeker üretimi kısıtlanıyor böylece Alpha-gal sendromlu insanlar için daha güvenli protein alternatifleri oluşturuluyor. Yapılan çalışmalar hayvanların sağlığını veya bu hayvanlardan elde edilen gıda ve ilaçların kalitesini etkilemiyor. FDA onaylı çalışmanın diğer çiftlik hayvanlarında da uygulanması, böylece insanlara güvenle tüketebilecekleri gıda ve ilaç ürünleri sunulması hedefleniyor.
